Gun Control in the United States

The topic of gun ownership remains a source of intense debate in the United States today. Proponents to revising gun control laws argue mainly of the dangers of widespread gun ownership. The opponents usually argue individual rights of self-protection and their right to bear arms. What really are the problems of current gun control issues? There are many different arguments regarding the topic of gun control and they will be evaluated through this paper. .
One may begin to understand a bit more about the problem some find in the new gun control laws by knowing more about the Second Amendment. The question is whether revising gun control laws will interfere with the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment reads as the followings, "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"(Green). The United States is currently protected by a trained volunteer military force, rather than a civilian militia, is the Second Amendment valid anymore? Does the Second Amendment give the rights to arms to supply a civilian militia or does it entail any citizen to have the right to bear arms (Green). Only regulations of firearms that impair the state's ability to arm their militias can be said to be unconstitutional. The reason is because the Second Amendment protects the interests of the state, not the individual (Green).
