The Pros and Cons of Hydraulic Fracking


            Hydraulic fracking has been going on since the 1940s. Today people in the United States and the world are concerned with the issues Fracking puts upon society. Fracking has become a very controversial topic. Hydraulic Fracturing is when a mixture of chemicals and water are pumped out of a drill and reaches into a gas well entering shale rock, high pressure causes the shale to crack and release natural gases. Fracking is a hot button issue in today's world because of the job opportunities and economic boom it has triggered, fear of contamination and public health, and the chaos it has brought to some communities. .
             Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) supports 2.1 million American jobs and promises a more energy-secure future for our country (Energy From Shale). Fracking is also accountable for 75 percent of all natural gas development. By 2025 Fracking will support 3.9 million jobs in the United States (Energy From Shale). This is great news for the American economy. Fracking has boosted local economies, generated royalty payments to property owners, and provided tax revenue to the government. One million American wells have been fracked since the 1940s. The money made and the energy saved from fracking has reached phenomenal numbers. .
             Hydraulic Fracturing has had some studies that prove it to be harm-less to its surroundings. Many country wide would disagree. Hydraulic Fracturing has affected humans as well as animals all over America. The public safety of citizens that live near these gas and oil wells are being toyed with. In the documentary film Gasland filmed by Josh Fox, Josh unveils the many issues Fracking has brought upon the public communities. Throughout the documentary people share myriad stories of their experiences with contaminated air and water due to living near fracking sites. Some stories are extreme as lighting there tap water on fire due to the contamination. Pennsylvania is where the film started out and it then branched into southern states where fracking is most popular.
