The Most Effective Parenting Style

Everyone is raised into a different family by different parents in different ways. Parenting has often been separated into styles of permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian. Although parents should avoid being lackadaisical with their kids, parents who are overly strict and leave no decisions to their children are more harmful to minors than beneficial. These parenting styles cause emotional problems, as well as cause the child to rebel at some point in their life.
Authoritarian parenting is defined as "strict, demanding but unresponsive, don't give children choices or options, and [parents] utilize punishments with little or no explanation" (1). This type of parenting causes various mental issues with children. In an essay by Dr. Laura Markham, she states that "kids raised with punitive discipline have tendencies toward anger and depression. That's because authoritarian child raising makes it clear to kids that a part of them is not acceptable." In many cases, this is true because in households with stricter parents, the parents tend to care more when their child fails than when they succeed. Children then begin to believe nothing they do is worthy of praise when parents focus solely on their failures and neglect their successes. This eventually leads to stress-induced anxiety and depression within the adolescent, which causes things such as frequent panic attacks and self-loathing. This is also brought up in an essay by a "parenting ally", "The Essence of the Strict Authoritarian Parenting Style: Long Term Effects". She states; "Children of authoritarian families may develop. Low self worth because they learn that they are only shown affection when they display good behavior. In even worse scenarios the only thing, they achieve by obeying is not being punished. In this way the kids don't feel accepted for who they are, but for what they do and then only, when they do well.
