Child Labor in Turkey, Ethiopia and India

The Labor Act however, does not cover agricultural enterprises that employ less than 50 employees. The lack of regulation in agricultural enterprises means that children in rural areas are exposed to longer work hours at a younger age. Despite having implemented a new Labor Act, and raising the compulsory education age, Turkey's child labor rate stands at 23.5 percent, as of September 2012. .
Ethiopia is facing problems similar to Turkey, in regards to the amount of young population they have. The International Labor Organization's website states that 52 percent of children between the ages of 5-17 in Ethiopia engage in economic activities. The Labor Proclamation of Ethiopia states that the minimum age of work is 14 years. According to Beliyou and Getinet Haile, 85% of the country's children were involved in illegal labor activities during "school-time." This number is further supplemented by the ILO, which states that 85% of children aged 5-17 engaged in economic or housekeeping activities that prevented school performance and attendance. They also state that the most of the labor activities the children engage in are "farming, fetching of firewood and water, caretaking, herding, and other domestic chores." These activities define the roles of the 89% of children who live in rural Ethiopia. Agricultural industries require long hours of work, which consequently lead to children being outside of school for a longer period of time. The need to supplement household income means sacrificing education, which leads to the continuous cycle of poverty and illiteracy. .

The International Olympic Committee having to take such a drastic step against a country of India's size means that there are fundamental problems in the implementation of policies and politics in general.
