Fishing and the Striped Bass Population

            Striped bass population decline has always been a problem for fishermen. The law abiding fishermen most with fishing as jobs face losing money and jobs due to the population decline. The government branch called NOAA are trying to stop fishing seasons and quotas short to save fish but consequently, have fishermen make less money by selling less fish with these regulations. NOAA makes and monitors the fishing quotas each year and do have the power to change it. Fishing regulations and population decline of striped bass are causing fishermen to make less money. Regulations make commercial fishermen take two fish per person per day or take five fish per boat. Poachers, who illegally steal fish, are stealing in different ways because eventually overtime the poachers are taking away from the population and the money from the fishermen. Overfishing and poaching are different things, poaching is illegally taking more fish that fishermen are supposed, and consequently, overfishing is legally taking fish. The fishermen depend on NOAA to protect and monitor the striped bass but also do not want stricter regulations to limit the amount of fish caught and money made. So overfishing makes more illegal poaching of fish which makes the national quota go down and makes the law-abiding fishermen make less money by selling less fish. The population of striped bass and fishermen's future jobs depend on overfishing, the quota, and poaching.
             Overfishing in the striped bass population is not illegal but is bad for the population. Scientists and the government set a national quota for striped bass that is suited for the amount of people fishing and the fish population. Overfishing and poaching tie together because once the quota is filled a large proportion of the population is already cut out and with poaching the population goes down even more. The poached fish do not get entered into the quota but do get taken out of the population.
