Women in The Epic of Gilgamesh


            The epic of Gilgamesh is translated by Benjamin R Foster a story whose main theme is finding your strength in adventures. On every step of his journey, there was a woman who was guiding him through every Adventure. Women played a very important role throughout the story, giving Gilgamesh the strength, confidence, and courage to breakthrough his difficult circumstances. Gilgamesh was the next heir to become King. However, his issues with morality in society didn't resonate well with his fellow people. He was overtly inappropriate with females by initiating violent sexual acts on them, costing the could be future Queens at their spot in higher society because after Gilgamesh attacked them, the young women no longer held purity in the eyes of the citizens.
             Despite his disapproving actions and negative attitude towards women, his guiding source was either a woman or a man sent by a woman. When his journey first begins, his mother Rimat-Ninsun, also known as The Wild Cow would pray to Shamash the sun-god in order to ensure his success on his quest to fight Humbaba. Ninsun was a very important character because she reoccurred throughout the story. She exemplifies strength in woman in the epic of Gilgamesh. She was caring, nurturing, and assisted her son during his expedition. Gilgamesh often encountered people on his journey that spoke of Ninsun in the highest respects. He had two dreams before his conquest. Gilgamesh dreamt of a force that fell upon him. People would watch him as he tried to carry and move it. However, he never seemed to be able to budge the object. In the dream, he fell in love with this force. He brought it before his mother, and Ninsun then rivaled to him that force that he dreams of will someday be his partner. She explained to him that this partner was to accompany him on his journeys. After she would decipher his visions, Gilgamesh would have clearness. The relationship between Gilgamesh and his birth mother, Ninsun, was the only loving relationship between him and women throughout the story.
