For six weeks he hid but was eventually caught and hung. The killing of Nat Turner resulted in even harsher laws against slaves and the end of the emancipation movement in the region. Turner made history as leader of one of the most gruesome slave revolts in America. Born on a plantation to Benjamin Turner, who instructed him to become knowledgeable in reading, religion, and writing. As a small child people thought he had a special talent because he spoke of and explained things that happened before his birth. Some of these people even made assumptions that he would certainly be a prophet. Turner was into his religion deeper than most and spent a lot of time reading his bible.
Turner worked on numerous plantations as the years passed. In 1821 turner gained the courageousness and decided to escape from Samuel Turner, his brother's previous owner. After thirty days of hiding in the woods he decided to return to the plantation because he received a sign that he believed to be a sign from God. Nat turner went from being the owner on Samuel Turner to Thomas Moore onto his widow and then finally John Travis, where he worked on his lands.
Hearing divine voices and believing in signs was only the minimum for Turner. In 1825 Turner had a vision of a very bloody conflict between white and black spirits. About three years later he received what he claimed to be another message from the man above. Turner explained "the spirit instantly appeared to me and said the serpent was loosened, and Christ had laid down the yoke he had borne of the sins of men and that I should take it on and fight against the serpent." He would later on receive another sign telling him when to fight, but this message meant "I should arise and prepare myself and slay my enemies with their own weapons.
