Writing a Formal Paper Using APA Style

            Formal writing using the American Psychological Association (APA) style includes a preference for using a 12 point font with Times New Roman typeface. APA requires paragraphs to be double spaced with the first sentence indented five to seven spaces or a ½ inch from the margin. Margins should be one-inch on all sides. You should also use the tab key to set the indentation for paragraphs. Please note that the undergraduate nursing faculty requires that two spaces be used at the end of sentences, although if preparing a manuscript for publication, then only one space would be used per APA. Please note that the default in word programs is two spaces. In reference citations on the reference page only one space after all forms of punctuation is used. The running head should be in CAPITAL letters and included on all pages on the left; page numbers on the right. Please note however that the words Running head is only in the title page as illustrated. If you do not know how to create a running head please consult the student assistants in the computer lab as they should be able to walk you through using the help prompts that are part of your word processing program.
