Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story

Did you know that you are a writer? Yes, You! I say this because every day is a new page to start fresh. I'm sure we've, more than likely, heard the term: "let your imagination run wild. Well, each day is like a blank canvas and your imagination is what brings it to life. So why is it that we let other people try and paint our lifestyles? By that I mean we allow others to change us. We have to show the world what we have to offer, it doesn't matter where we came from, as long as we stand out. There's over a billion people in the world, so that s over a billion stories. .
I remember my first time meeting my roommate, once starting college. Amongst the two of us we had stories for days to come. As time had gone by we got to learn about each other and form a friendship. She was from New York, and I was from Miami. Of course there was much to discuss, such as weather, styles and fashion, transportation, etc. We were able to mentally live in two different places in the world all because of the stories we exchanged. Stories hold a lot of information, and if your imagination is creative enough you can be anywhere.
Chimamand Adichie, talks about her upbringing as a child and all she endured and observed. Explaining how the types of books she read had a great impact on her. Exposing her to the world outside the one she knew by naked eye. She used books as her eye sight and imagination to travel to the places she'd had never been. Continuing on to talk about her roommate in college, who was at awe with her nationality, and was excited in getting to know her. Yet to her disappointment, hey had not really been that different at all. However, the roommate was probably not exposed as in-depth as Ms. Adichie. For example: when the roommate asked to hear her "tribal music", which she didn't play for her, but played a Mariah Carey disc instead. She had been disappointed, but the tune she heard.
