Animal testing is an issue in today's society that, whether or not anyone realizes it, it does affect each of us, through things such as medicine, beauty products, to almost any product you have in your own homes. We have all used medications. We have all used some types of man-made product, if not hundreds throughout our lives. Today a large debate has erupted on whether it should be okay or not. Many people are pro towards this research, and let it continue, but there are a great deal of people who oppose animal testing, and they make sure their opinions are heard. Articles by people like Justin Goodman, and Ben Goldacre discuss this issue. Even some artists, through political cartoons, want a say in this debate. Though through different ways, the works of these 3 authors, make one statement clear; animal testing should not be allowed.
One major point discussed by all three authors is the cruelty used in animal testing. That is the main topic in many protester's arguments. Animals are being force fed, deprived of food and water, inflicted with wounds, just to study effects. Scientists go to such extremes that, according to Ben Goldacre's article, "Animal Testing," "Animals are being killed by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, and decapitation." None of these barbaric actions are being regulated by anyone. Such inhumane actions lead to statistics stated by Goldacre, "97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief." In Justin Goodman's article titled "The Argument Against Laboratory Testing on Animals," he agrees and also expresses his pain for these animals. Through the use of ethos, he also affirms his disgust and how he is sadden by the amount of animals that have to suffer through torturous pain. He tells of a story about how a dog was given to a shelter, but later taken home by a new owner.
