American Suburbs in The Swimmer

He is caught off guard when she turns him away (391). The reader observes that his affair and marriage lack genuine love which becomes clear when he refers to love as, "sexual roughhouse," (390). Neddy names the path he takes home the, "Lucinda River," (384) which Cheever uses to further play on the security and longevity of Neddy's marriage and family. Neddy's choice to name the river after his wife becomes ironic when the path deposits him at a lonely and empty place-his abandoned home. It is clear to the reader that Neddy has taken his friendships, affairs, and marriage for granted. Neddy's choice to live a life concerned with material successes and social standing leaves him without any genuine relationships and in the state of emptiness the reader finds him in at the end of the story. .
Cheever uses Neddy's journey across the county to show the emptiness that lies beneath a life of wealth and material success. The swimming pools represent periods of time that Neddy passes through. His journey is marked by changes in the weather and seasons which mirror Neddy's changing life circumstances. At the beginning of the story, Neddy is strong and active and feels deep contentment with his life. He is warm in the sunshine and is conscious of nothing but his own happiness and the pleasures of the day (384). Halfway through his journey, a storm passes which marks a turning point in Neddy's life. When the storm ends, "the rain had cooled the air," (386) which suggest to the reader that he has lost some of his happiness and vigor. Neddy notices the leaves have changed colour, and he feels a, "peculiar sadness at this sign of autumn," (386). As, he continues to progress from pool to pool, he continues to get colder and grow weaker. His journey even sees him turn into a "pitiful," (387) figure by the side of the highway. The final pool is freezing cold which suggests to the reader that autumn has arrived fully.
