Poe and the Importance of the Crime Scene


            Edgar Allan Poe was known to the world for his horrific, jaw dropping short stories and poems and also for being a literary genius of his time due to the unfamiliar writing style he presented. Though well known for works such as: Annabel Lee, The Raven, The Tell Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado, Poe is also recognized as being the creator of Gothic writing. Poe's Gothic writing style primarily focused around the themes of death and mourning which lands him a place in the dark romanticism genre. His extreme writing style separates him from other writers as his dark tone creates him a space in a genre of his own. Poe has played a major impact in literature and television as we know it today by being the founder of the detective fiction genre, his unique use of irony and symbolism, implementing satire and bestowing hoaxes, which led to literature and the lifestyle we know today. .
             Currently there are many crime shows on television ranging from shows such as: CSI, Law & Order, The Mentalist and Criminal Minds, that follow in Poe's footstep by making the horrific crime the center of attention. They are growing more and more popular over time and many of these forms of shows are being produced each year. The plot of all of these are similar, by telling of something gruesome happening such as murder and the tracking down of the perpetrator in order to bring forth justice. Many of the character in these investigation shows are notable and very distinguished mostly due to their clever minds. The originator of this type of mystery and suspenseful style however is none other than Edgar Allan Poe. .
             One of the most well-known fictional characters in literature is the famous Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is a witty, cunning detective who has an assistant by the name of Dr. John H. Watson, the character Sherlock Holmes was created by a Scottish author Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle. Throughout the novels Sherlock is faced with crimes that he must solve along with the help of his dear friend Watson, he usually does so by using logical reasoning and various disguises.
