Based on the Robert Wiene silent horror film" The Cabinet of dr.Caligari" from 1920, today Arcola Theatre staged their own version of the movie. In 1920 "The Cabinet of dr.Caligari" is one of the most influential silent horror films that define the German Expressionism. The plot is presented as Friedrich Fehér (Joseph Kloska) flashbacks. In the German town Hollstenwall is the annul fair ,and Francis and his friend Alan with his fiancée Jane(Sophie Roberts) , go to visit it ; there, they find that the fair attraction is " The Cabinet of dr. Caligari' , where a mysterious doctor, dr. Caligari shows a somnambulist (Caesare) who predicts the future. As a "poor-theatre", the Simple8 staged this scene as simple as possible in a way in which even though you know nothing about the German Expressionism, you are still able to understand this play because the Theatre Company Simple8 staged their own version of the movie not a replay of it. In regard to this, there is a resemblance of the play with the 1920 silent film, because after recovering from a tough war, the film industry was going through difficult times and the filmmakers made films from "scrap". .
Because the plot was taking place in different locations, the ensemble was perfectly synchronized with the help of lighting done my Sherry Coenen , the shift from a scene to another would not be so well done without the help of lightening due to the lack of space as a end stage theatre. The three, Francis, Alan and Jane, are welcomed by doctor Caligari to take place of his show with a somnambulist who predicts that until dawn, Alan will die and indeed he died. But who is the killer? Who murdered Alan? Beautiful lit, in this scene the room becomes completely dark and a torch lights those two hands that kill Alan. Also load noises fill the stage as the actors prepare for the next scene.
