Metaphysical Poetry

This argumentative structure is also highlighted in 'a dialogue between body and soul' as Marvel appoints individual stanza to the 'soul' and 'body' to convey the growing conflict between the two separate entities. The uses of the stated techniques allow us to view that both poems carry several definitive characteristics that metaphysical poets embody.
Marvell begins "To his coy mistress" by debuting the theme of tempus fugit, the idea that time flies , the in the opening lines of the thesis in the form of a rhyming couplet. The persona announces that "had we but world enough time, this coyness lady were no crime", essentially denoting the fact that if he had enough time his desire would be to court and love his mistress for eternity. This statement is followed by the expression of his frustration regarding the idea that the mistress is appearing to be shy and coy when time is running out. He uses romantic words such as "long loves day" to create a luring, enticing image his of the personas intentions of courting her for long periods of time. The alliteration enforces this argument of his overflowing love by hyperbolically stating that he would love her, "Ten years before the flood, till the conversion of the Jews". The biblical allusion creates a visual image of the duration of his affection.
The argument continues to be put forward as the antithesis is presented in the second stanza. In this stanza the persona makes an expansion on his argument as when he incorporates the theme of Memento Mori which is the thought that death is always present. He enforces a harsh reminder to his mistress that we are beings that are subject to morality and death and that she is no exception and inevitably death will eventually overcome her. He uses a persuasive and argumentative tone to lure the mistress into consummating their relationship.
