The Suffocating Security Blanket

It's a part of human nature to keep some things to ourselves as a self-preservation tactic. Of course you don't want anyone to know that you have a third nipple, and yeah, you should probably keep that fact that you have a collection of toenail clippings on the down low. These secrets, while a little embarrassing (or disturbing), are relatively harmless. However, many people are plagued by one secret that is not only crippling, but can sometimes be deadly. Eating disorders in all their forms are a serious issue in today's society. They are not discriminatory diseases as some people may elect to think, and if not treated can do irreparable damage to the mind and body. These mental diseases (because yes, that is what they are) are often times held close to the vest. Unfortunately, the stigmas associated with eating disorders often prevent sufferers from seeking help. Just like you would feel shameful and a little bit more than embarrassed by someone finding your toenail clippings, sufferers of an eating disorder feel that same shame, embarrassment, and judgment on a level far beyond what you could imagine. Countless lives will be improved, and even saved, if the stigmas of eating disorders are lifted from the mind of society. This progress toward help and accepting and recovery starts small. It can start with you. .
The first image that needs to be dispelled from the your mind is that "anorexics are just the starving, skinny girls" and that "bulimia just means you make yourself throw up, right?" These simplistic thoughts regarding anorexia and bulimia make them seem less significant, less dangerous, and less likely to be taken seriously. Another grave misconception is that these are the only eating disorders out there. Binge eating, an eating disorder that is often overlooked, is the consuming of large quantities of food while not inducing vomiting or other weight management strategies.
