The Truth About Pit Bulls

I entered a dog store one day and I started looking around when a little black and white pit bull came running up to me. She was playful and full of joy. I had to have her. That day I named her Maxie. When someone asks what type of dog I have and my answer is, "pit bull," I get this look as if I am insane. In fact, she is the total opposite of what a person would think of a pit bull. She is loving, silly, loves to cuddle, and always tries to please me. I wanted to examine this topic because I noticed this is still an issue that many dog owners including myself face. I wanted to know about their temperaments, dog laws that states have imposed, and the Michael Vick story. I want people to be knowledgeable about this topic because not all pit bulls are vicious and deadly. .
In the New York Times, numerous protestors were faced with the hardship of having to give up their pit bull or have it put to death. States are banning owners from having pit bulls. States are demanding these dogs to have insurance with liability and a tight leash. These laws that are being placed are unfair to those who are responsible dog owners. Banning pit bulls does not address the fact of the owners who abuse their pit bulls and participate them into dogfights. Pit bulls are not the only dogs that bite and these laws make it seem that they should not exist at all. .
In the magazine article of the aftermath of Michael Vick's dogs, it brought attention to people who thought these dogs were monsters. People realized after seeing how loving and playful these dogs were that it was not their fault. The government agreed to only allow Vick's dogs only if they were perfect. They had to be able to learn manners, how to be around furniture, and walk on a leash. These dogs did not just represent any pit bull, but ones who were engaged in fighting. Vicks' dogs have changed the views of many people that pit bulls are a great addition to the families.
