The Rise of Death Metal in Tampa Bay

He developed a formula that he himself later broke with more progressive music as he started another band 'Control Denied' in the late 1990's. His early sound was called "almost prog, but still Chuck" (Vincent, 2014, as cited in Dunn, 2014) by other death metal pioneer David Vincent of Morbid Angel. Gene Hoglan, drummer for 'Death' 1992-1995, is also credited as being highly influential to modern death metal drumming, with his staggered and fast double kick drumming becoming a common technique within the genre (Hoglan, 2008). With this new sound being developed and perfected, it was Morrisound Studios in Tampa Bay, and the producer Scott Burns, who are "credited for crafting the legendary Florida death metal sound" (Dunn, 2014).
A hugely important part of the Tampa Death Metal scene was bands' use of Morrisound Studios in Tampa Bay Florida, and the skill of the engineers Tom Morris and Scott Burns. Albums recorded at this studio had a distinctive sound and were considered "highly produced, clean and crisp" (Kahn-Harris, 2014) which was almost unheard of previously in all forms of metal. Morrisound Studios is referred to as the "Home of the Death Metal Scene" (Dunn, 2014) by Sam Dunn in the "Extreme Metal" episode of his documentary series "Metal Evolutions". The Tampa area had huge cultural focus which resulted in many Tampa death metal bands being signed to major labels (Kahn-Harris, 2007). Scott Burns, became the first person to successfully mix fast double bass drums (Webster, 2014) and is "credited with crafting the Florida death metal sound" (Dunn). He would go on to produce many albums and demos from death metal bands including, 'Sepultura's' - "Beneath the Remains" (1989), 'Obituary's' - "Slowly We Rot" (1989), 'Death's' - "Leprosy" (1988), 'Cannibal Corpse's' - "Eaten Back to Life" (1990) and many more highly influential death metal releases.
