Research Paper - Pharmacology

I got to see the inner workings of a pharmacy and how the pharmacist does their job. There were shelves upon shelves of medication in order of relevance. They use a pill counter to fill the prescriptions and a bio-metric fingerprint scanner to confirm the process. I asked the pharmacist what it took to simply become a pharmacy technician. I was told that "all one would need is a high school diploma and a class that teaches you the job and required duties" (Daniel. I spoke with one of the technicians and asked her if she was in school to become a pharmacist. She said that she was planning to pursue a career in pharmacy and was working as a technician while she went to school. She told me, in order to be a pharmacologist, I would need to go to college for four years and get a degree in pharmaceutical science. I would then need to complete a least two years of graduate school in a pharmacy program.
There are various career choices in the field of pharmacy. One option is a retail pharmacist. A retail pharmacist is a person who dispenses medication, usually at a drug store or pharmacy. They tend to "pay well and benefits are excellent, the hours can be tough in retail pharmacy jobs" (Santiago). Their shifts are usually twelve hours long. Clinical pharmacists usually work in a medical facility or hospital. They work alongside with a physician and their patient to help the doctor determine which medication meets the need of the patient. A pharmacist who doesn't interact with patients directly is one who specializes in long-term care. They are generally referred to as "closed door pharmacists" (Santiago). They usually work in a facility where patients are unable to care for themselves and need medication. They dispense medication into a cart that is then given to nurses on staff. The nurses then give the medication to the patients. This is better for someone who enjoys working without constant interaction with patients.
