Suzanne Collins, author of "The Hunger Games," writes an amazing novel with many valuable lessons to be learned from it. In The Hunger Games the world has been ravaged by nature, and instead of the United States we now have the districts of Panem. One extremely powerful government controls them all and it has become a dictatorship that will do anything to stay in power. So the government created the Hunger Games where two tributes of children are taken from each district to fight to the death in the arena. This is how the new government expresses its power society must follow or be destroyed by this over powerful government. In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins she shows what the dangers of too much power can do to a society. she does this with the use of characters, symbols, point of view, and setting. .
Many of the characters in The Hunger Games are a great representation of how the power of the government is effecting its people. Katniss Everdeen, Primrose Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, Haymitch Abernathy, Rue, and President Coriolanus Snow all show in a different way what the power of the government, or dictatorship has done to its people and districts. Katniss Everdeen is the main character of this novel, and the story is told from her point of view. Katniss has had to become a provider for her family as a teenager because her father died while working in the coal mines. Her family is impoverished and because of this Katniss at a young age has to break the law just to get food for her family climbing over the electric fence that surrounds her district 12 to hunt. "I flatten out on my belly and slide under a two-foot stretch that's been lose for years. I almost always enter the woods here." (Collins 10). Katniss must sneak out of her district illegally to hunt food for her family because without it they would starve. Katniss has not only had to become a provider for her family, but she must volunteer for her sister Prim who is drawn to enter the games which is a fight to the death with two other children or teenagers from the other districts it is to remind the people that a rebellion will never stand against the government again.
