The Story of Hansel and Gretel

We all grew up hearing the traditional stories of Hansel and Gretel, but as times goes we are seeing more and more of the new versions. The latest movie version of "Hansel & Gretel; The Witch Hunt" is a horror movie expanding upon the fairytale. There are similarities to the textbook version. But filmmakers made certain alteration to the characters, the ending and twisted the storyline. The movie more complex and darker opposed to the happily-ever-after in the traditional story. .
As mentioned before, in the "Witch Hunters", the original elements from the textbook version are there. But they made some changes to the characters. Hansel was the main protagonist. He is always optimistic and clever, making sure he comes with a plan to outsmart the adults. He dropped the white pebbles on the way to the forest so he could find his way home. He comforted his sister Gretel. He took her by the hand though the forest, following the white pebbles. The movie portrayed Hansel as somewhat distant and dull. He didn't ask question. He just did his own thing and killed the witches. Hansel seemed like he didn't care much about anything else. Gretel on the other hand, turns completely around. She was more active, interactive, and more curious about the witches. She also was the one interacting with the customers. In the book, Gretel is portrait as helpless and very shy. Before killing the witch she could barely do anything on her own, afraid and always needing help from Hansel.
They made significant modification to the original story. In the book there was only one witch, which tried to eat the children's and got burned. Unlike on the movie were there was a community of witches. Even though on both version they had the same objective that was eating the children's. Also another modification made, was that in the book. The witch had a bad eyesight and could barely see. But her lack of eyesight was compensated with a great sense of smell, like an animal.
