Dubray Books - Management Report

This report examines our chosen management topics of Planning, Human Resources and Leadership. After study of available literature we concluded that these topics were suitable choices. We chose Dubray Books on Grafton Street as our subject. The company was started in 1988 with one branch in Bray before moving to a more prominent location on the main street. In 1990 the Grafton Street branch opened as 'The Dublin Bookshop'. The company took on the Dubray name after expansion to Kilkenny and Rathmines in 1994. In 2002 the Dublin Bookshop relocated to its current location where we carried out our interview. Dubray Books is one of Ireland's largest independent booksellers with eight branches nationwide.

One of the main functions of management is leading, which involves getting individuals or groups to assist willingly and harmoniously in attaining organisational goals. Leading usually involves directing, motivating and communicating with employees. The leading function is almost entirely concerned with managing people within the organisation.
Three basic building blocks of a good leader – or generic leadership skills – may include the following:.
             (i) The capacity to develop and mobilize stakeholders around a shared vision;.
(ii) The ability to ensure effective translation of that vision into concrete outcomes;.
(iii) A commitment to integrity and ethics and the practice of accountability.
Leadership is an essential and integral part of good management. Managers who do not lead are often considered to be neglecting an important managerial function. According to Modern Management (Tiernan & Morley 2013) it has been argued that when lacking its leadership dimensions, management is reduced to mere administration and that organisations that are managed without leadership generally perform more poorly than their counterparts where such leadership is an integral component of the management cannon.
