Art Review - The Banjo Lesson

"The Banjo Lesson" was painted by a wonderful and talented artist named Henry Ossawa Tanner. This piece of art was Tanner's most famous piece of work. He painted this in 1893. This 49x35.5 inch piece of art is located in Hampton, Virginia at Hampton University Museum. This painting is so detailed. The artist uses colors to set the mood to the art piece. This is a serious, compassionate, and loving picture. .
In this painting the main focus is the man and the little boy. The way the little boy is sitting in the lap of the old man suggest that he could be a relative, maybe a grandson. The man is seems very knowledgeable about the banjo. The little boy seems to be very interested in what he is being taught. The old man skin complexion and clothing is darker than everything that has something to do with the little boy. This could be to show who the teacher is and who the student is. The hat on the floor by the chair suggest that the man may have been sitting down playing the banjo when the little boy walked in. The little boy is really concentrating on his hand position while playing the banjo. The old man is also paying close attention to the boys hand position. The shadows in the room could mean that it is late in the afternoon and the sun is going down. .
The colors and scenery suggest that the family was poor. Although they do not seem to have much the man and boy seem to be very happy. They seem like they do not have a care in the world. It seem like they are the only two that matters and nothing else even exist. The artist uses earth tones, brown and tan, in the center of the painting with the old man and little boy. On the right lower side of the chair on the leg you can see that it is brighter than anything else in the center of the room. That may be the glow off of the fireplace. In the back, behind the man and little boy there is a cabinet. The cabinet is a mixture of light, dark tan and a light bluish grayish top.
