Tolly in From Time to Time

Sometimes connections between present and past are too weak that it is impossible to find clear borders, and time plays a trick with people. The film "From Time to Time" is fantasy interpretation of the life of two generations of one family that has been living in an old house for centuries. While the movie includes the number of characters with different temper, I was mainly impressed by Tolly. The purpose of this paper is to analyze, why he is my favorite character. For the first time we meet Tolly (played by young actor Alex Etel) at the beginning of the film, when he arrives to his grandmother's house. Tolly is thirteen years old teenager, clever and handsome. He understands everything what is going on even without the words, and his abilities to communicate also impress. Thus, Tolly is not afraid to tell the truth directly to the person, even if that truth is bitter. He is sincere and tries to call a spade a spade. For instance, while he is driven to his new home, he asks his accompanied person to speak directly, saying that if he was in captivity, he would prefer to know that. Moreover, he is faith and clear with his grandmother, and he does not allow himself to lie or cover the truth.
Tolly's father was at war, and his fate is unknown to a family till the end of a movie. Moreover, when the boy arrives to his grandmother, he understands that she is in need, and lack of money forces her to sell old family house. However, the house does not wish to have other owners, so that it starts to reveal its secret. Tolly sees ghosts of the past, and some of them also are able to see him. It is significant to mention the courage and staunchness, expressed by the boy during such appearances, as far as he is not afraid viewing people, who are already died, but percepts that as the thing, which should be. He sympathizes his ancient relatives and even tries to help them. Tolly's empathy has its strongest expression in accordance to blind Susan and Jacob, as well as to other people, who are in some way limited or oppressed.
