Juliet - A Dramatically Compelling Character

Even if it is with the intent of making Juliet "happy", it could be interpreted that Lord Capulet is acting immature in the sense that he treats marriage, which is usually taken to be a major life event, very lightly. The difference in the way Juliet and her father view marriage is an example of how conflicting views are expressed between the young and old, shattering the preconceived notion that the old are always wiser than the young. Despite being the younger partner in the relationship, Juliet is forced to grow up as the plays progresses to fill the role as the more reasonable and logical partner in her relationship with Romeo. Compared to Romeo who is emotional and deeply passionate, Juliet is the one who thinks logically about their relationship. This is evident in the balcony scene where Juliet questions Romeo's sudden and rash declaration of love:.
I have no joy of this contract tonight.
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden,.
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be.
Ere one can say "It lightens." (2.2.116).
Juliet feels that Romeo is rushing their relationship too quickly. In this sense, Juliet personifies the theme of reason in the theme of Passion vs Reason by her role in her relationship with Romeo, who, on the other hand, acts rashly and without much thought. However, the irony is that she also has her moments of passion, such as when she threatened to kill herself in front of the Friar in order to remain faithful to Romeo:.
Be not so long to speak. I long to die.
If what thou speak'st speak not of remedy. (4.1.68).
She brings up the theme among herself, as she contradicts herself by giving in to passion and ultimately leads to her plan of desperation that kills the both of them. This act of her giving in to passion lead to the major tipping point of the play that leads to the couple's demise later on in the play. This drives the plot forward, albeit towards a tragic end.
