            Which of the three factors had the greatest impact on Chuck Noles Fate/ability to survive? First of all, I think this is two questions in itself. Chuck Noles Fate is determined by chance while his ability to survive is determined by his heredity. His intelligence ends up being one of the key tools in surviving the four and a half years on a desolate island. Chance also plays an important role because without chance he wouldn't have survived for as long.
             Once of the most important times chance shows itself is when Mr. Noles unbuckled his seat belt in the plane and stood up. Why you would do this while experiencing extreme turbulence is beyond me but it actually saves the man from extinction. On the other hand we see the copilot try to use the same trick but we see later that Chuck takes the man size 9 ½ shoe and tries to fit his size 10 in it. Cutting off the toes seems to work for him though. Another example of chance is how the boxes ended up on the island and not sinking to the bottom or missing the island completely. The coconuts also happen to be ripe when he is on the island. Although he was there for a long time and it would have eventually came around sometime it is something exceptional to start out with.
             Chuck Noles intelligence is why he survives on the island. Although chuck is there awhile he uses his time to calculate the tides so he can determine the most opportune time to leave. To make rope to tie his boat together he harvests palm-like-leaves and weaves them together to make rope. He thinks of clever ways to get what he wants. He sees there is an abundance of fish and utilizes the mesh he finds to make a net. Which brings me to my next point, he utilizes all the opportunities chance provides him. For instance, he drops a rock in frustration while trying to crack a coconut for its milk, however, the rock breaks and he uses the shards to penetrate the tough surface. He also finds ways to use almost everything he finds in the boxes that was up onshore.
