Mental Battles - The War Isn't Over Yet

            United States veterans are not able to leave the horrors of war on the battlefield. Imagine the veteran not being able to sleep because every time they close their eyes they are forced to relive memories from the past that they attempt to bury deep. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the reason why these courageous military service members cannot live a normal life when they are discharged. Veterans might not be in a psychical war when they return, but they are in a mental battle with PTSD. One out of every five military service members on combat tours, return home with symptoms of PTSD or major depression. There are multifarious explanations why the government neglects veterans and should assist veterans who deal with severe PTSD: Female veterans deal with a much larger amount of stress than male veterans. There is a high number of suicides when soldiers are discharged. Also, veteran families are split apart from secondary victimization. This is what happens to the unfortunate men and women who are struggling with PTSD. The United States government neglects veterans that are diagnosed with PTSD because they don't provide proper mental health services. The care veterans receive by the U.S government is unacceptable because they are carelessness towards veterans mental health. Veterans deserve the best mental health services. .
             Female veterans deal with a much larger amount of stress than male veterans because the military environment can be more discriminating towards being a woman because they are seen as weak. Laura Kasinof states in her article that the United States Army harasses female veterans by "acting like a girl" or "being a woman" is a form of weakness (7-8). This shows that the military is being sexist and treating female veterans cruelly that cause them to have PTSD. Women soldiers have to prove to the military that they are capable of doing anything male veterans can do.
