If Spartan men would have been allowed to live with their wives after marriage at any age, it would prevent a lot of bastard children from being born; this would also prevent them from killing off infants that could have made it in Spartan society. Allowing Spartans to rape women as a symbol for their masculine violence and violation is also contradicting because they have a chance of producing a child outside of wedlock, and also because they should not rape anyone especially the women of Sparta that they are trying to protect. Rape is an unacceptable act, but raping women of the nation that the Spartan warriors were trying to protect is ridiculous. They were supposed to prevent their women and children from being slaved or harmed but they were the ones harming them in order to prove masculinity. .
Babies were important to Sparta especially male babies because those babies were the future Spartans and future warriors that would protect them. When a child was born the elders would inspect the child. They would look for any flaws or deformation in the child. They would judge the baby based on the size of the body, legs, arms, and in some cases the genital area3. The bigger the body parts the better the chance for survival and the stronger the child would potentially be. If a child was found to have any problems, deformations or not meet the elder's criteria for the Spartan life style, the elders would dispose of the child. They would either kill the infant or abandon it to die on its own. The Spartans did not want individuals to reproduce children with deformations because the deformed child would probably then reproduce another deformed child and it would contaminate their population4. The Spartans also believed that the child with deformed parts would not be strong enough to fight for Sparta. Male infants were judged by height and size of body parts. The goal was to have the biggest male infants so that they would survive the military camp and also be able to fight in the military with no difficulties.
