The Australian Coffee Culture

As a saying goes," as long as there is coffee in the world, how bad could things be?" this would be what South Australians think. Even though SA is not the source of coffee like Melbourne and Sydney, coffee drinking is still highly demanded by people in SA. Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that caffeine is the most widely consumer psychoactive drug in the world, but unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world. Coffee is not only a drink but also a kind of culture in Australia. This report includes the information about the history of coffee in Australia, the reasons why South Australians love drinking coffee, to what extent has coffee culture affected South Australia, and what makes it become a type of culture more than just a drink.
When it comes to the history of coffee in Australia, it has to go back to 1950s, when the World War 2 came to an end. Since then, high quality espresso coffee started to play an important part in Australian people's daily life. A large amount of Europeans, especially Italian and Greek, immigrated to Australia and made there their new home in the early 20th century due to the European devastation in World War 2. Believe it or not, one prized possession that was packed into this fleeing immigrant's luggage was their stove-top espresso coffee maker and coffee machine. The Italian and Greek immigrants could not leave their hometowns without espresso coffee due to their craze about it. Eventually, they brought their addition of coffee to the new found home and shared the craze with Australia local residents. Besides that, European immigrants started to run coffee business and established Italian-style cafes. Gradually, the espresso coffee culture started to expand significantly in the 1980s and became the gold standard for cafes and coffee shops right across the nation today.
