Christian Martyrs and the Early Christian Movement

The Roman Empire suffered during the Marcus Aurelius Reign as the population began to decline due to millions of people losing their lives. Many difficulties began to arise among the people of Rome especially financially which resulted in division in society. As Christian numbers in the Empire had lowered, there was a need for structure and discipline in the church. After the death of Nerva in 98C.E, Trajan succeeded to head position of the Emperor and more problems began to arise. Persecution became common and many Christians were tortured in many ways because they were Christian. The Romans worshipped many Gods. They didn't want to follow or tolerate Christianity as they feared disappointing these Gods. The Emperor was seen as divine and belief in Jesus challenged the Romans as they tried not to disobey or anger the Gods. Gods in Roman times played a massive role in society and they feared any competition from Christianity. Christians refused to worship any Roman Gods. The Romans saw this as political opposition to the Roman Rule. Christianity was seen as a capital offence. Pliny the Younger wrote to Trajan to address the problem. It is thought that these letters are the most important among non-Christian texts on Christianity during the first two centuries. These letters set the official policy of the Roman Empire towards Christians. Pliny's letter contained the earliest description of Christian worship and teachings. Pliny and Trajan addressed how Christianity was not of any threat to Rome. The Romans still inflicted capital punishment on Christians but this urged Christians to convince Roman of their loyalty. 2.
