Fredrick was born possibly around 1817. He was born into slavery so Fredrck never knew his father. He also didn't know when he was born either. Fredrick like say to his birthday was Feburary 14, because his mother called him her "Little Valentine". Then when he was seven she died. When Fredrick was older he met a girl named Anna Murray, they then escaped together and later got married. Then Fredrick dropped his slave name, Fredrick Augustue Washington Bailey and became Fredrick Douglass. .
Fredrick became a lecuturer for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. He was such a very good speaker that some people questioned whether he was ever a slave. He then wrote an autobiography to answer the question. He provided so much detail that he had to put his self in danger and had to flee to England. There he continued to speak. He spoke out against slavey and argued for irish freedom, women's rights, and world peace.
Then he came back to America. Fredrick then started a newspaper called the North Star. Fredrick wrote on a varity of topics slavery was just one of them. He remained very concerned about the safety and right of the slaves, he wrote: "Those who prfess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground". In order to atack job discrimination against blacks, he wrote, "We need mechanics as well as ministers; we must buildas as live in houses; we must construct bridges as well as pass over them".
He responded to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, by writing that the "The Remedy" to the legislation was a "Good Revolver", a steady hand and determination to shoot down any man attempting to kidnap a fugitive slave. During this time Fredrick also found time to publish his autobiography, My Bondage and Freedom, in 1855. He payed attention to the Jim CRow laws in the North, by entering public places in which he knew these laws were enforced, sometimes risking a physical boot out of those places.
