They shouted like, "Niggers, niggers, the niggers are in." "You nigger better run around and go home." (72) These are some of the many discrimination of Jeanne and Melba had experienced. It is difficult for both of them to involve in this kind of discrimination, especially with their age. Jeanne was unhappy with all the rejections she received, but she never gave up proving herself to them. She pushed herself to excel in her studies and in baton twirling. Jeanne had overcame this kind of situation, and she became happy and energetic young girl. Eventually, Jeanne's skill in baton twirling gave her some acceptability. She is chosen as the leader in drums and bugle corps. Similarly, Melba didn't also give up but in comparison, she fought for their rights. Melba heard so many words, but these words didn't make her down. Melba and her friends had so much struggle in attending school. They faced verbal and physical assaults, as well as death threats against themselves and their families. The nine African-American students continued and remained focused on their education. As a result, they graduated from high school. These students never stop until they got what they wanted. They became braver to fight for their rights.
Jeanne and Melba also face racism. Because of Jeanne's race and appearance, she was repeatedly denied. When Jeanne and her family finally leaves Manzanar, she continued going to school. One of the students said, "Gee, I didn't know you could speak English." (157) Jeanne tried to become an American as possible. On the other hand, it was Melba's first day of school at Central High School, and everybody was shouting, "Niggers, go home! Niggers, go back where you belong!" (35) Melba didn't mind them and continued walking. These quotes truly gives an example where Jeanne and Melba faced racism. Jeanne did everything in order to accept her. She never thought of giving up.
