Why have obesity rates increased so much in the last few decades? Well a few things have changed since then, cellphones were invented, more video games have been created, crime rates have increased, schools have made budget cuts, and less time has been spent among families. Cellphones allow users to do a number of things like stream movies, play games, participate in social media, etc.; the invention of the cellphone has technically replaced the use of a television. Individuals stare into their phones for more than half of their day in productivity, for most people, half of this time a person is sitting down. Cellphone use also inhibits an individual from sleeping, which is another cause of obesity. Many cellphone users tend to sleep less which can hinder a metabolic rate. More reason of obesity rise from the lack of tradition.
Adults who were born before the 1970-80's lived a lifestyle where running around outside all day was a form of daily exercise. Back then crime rate was at its lowest, parents didn't have to worry about child abductions or shootings. Currently, children's form of daily exercise is 30 minutes of school recess. Crime rate has increased since the 1990's to present day. Also, it seems as though allowing children outside without adult supervision is frowned upon now due to the increase in crime rates. Children are now sitting indoor playing with their phones and watching television all day. Video games are now getting more advanced as the years pass, allowing children to have more "leisure time." Video games are a partial blame for childhood obesity. Video games become longer and longer in game plays. This longer game play inhibits a gamer to spend most of his or her summertime indoors. Times have changed since older generations of children and teenagers, many children now spend most of their leisure time with a piece of technology. Games can be beneficial at supplementing exercise such as the "Wii Fitness", and systems like the " Xbox Connect".
