The theme of materialism in this story focuses on those women who force their husbands provide for them things that they cannot afford. Men are obliged to make unreasonable decisions that finally make the families end up in poverty. A lot of people like comparing themselves with their friends, neighbors or their peers so that they look to be at par. It however results in unfavorable consequences. In the two stories, the theme of materialism has been expressed. It, therefore, shows that some fictional writings do share some themes. Research by various literature scholars has proved it to be a trend these days. However, most writers do not know of the existence of such similarities (Maupassant 109).
Romance as a theme is present in other two fictional stories. The stories are Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James and Youth and Other Science Fiction Stories by H.W. Moss. In Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James, a story unfolds of a college graduate Anastasia Steele, her friend Katharine Kavanagh and a rich young man called Christian Grey. In the story, there are evident practices showing bondage, dominance and sadism all of which are in romance. Romance is the theme that is dominant in the story. Ana is attracted to Christian, they eventually date have sex and later realize that they are incompatible. In the story, Ana's friend Kate also dates Christian's brother Elliot. Rodriguez attempts to date Ana, but it eventually fails. After all these, the relationship between Ana and Christian finally ends. The story is solely revolving around romance and love as the central theme. These are what many young ladies in college and those who have just graduated go through. They date rich people and later realize that they are incompatible. Here is where they break and find their true lovers (James 47). On the other hand, the story Youth and Other Science Fiction Stories by H.W. Moss also center on the theme of Romance.
