Dill made a plan to try and get Boo to come out of the house. He dared Jem to go up to the house and slap the door to see his Boo would show himself. Jem went and slapped the house door and ran to his own front porch. When he looked back, he saw a small movement come from the shutter, then the house became still. .
A new year came along with spring. School was finally ending for the Finch siblings, but Boo was still fresh in their minds. After school one day, Scout decided to make her way home instead of waiting for Jem. When she approached the Radley home she began to run. As she was running by the house she noticed something twinkle in the corner of her eye. Seeing a twinkle made her stop and look back only to see a piece of tin foil sticking out of a knot hole in one of the Radley's trees. She checked to see if the coast was clear then she slowly walked up to the tree. She looked in and found two pieces of gum, which she grabbed and ran home. When Jem finally arrived home Scout was chewing the gum. He asked where she got it and after she told him he told her to spit it out. He was afraid that Boo could have done something to the gum. On the last day of school Scout waited for Jem so that they could walk home together. As they approached the Radley house Scout pointed out the tree where she found the pieces of gum. Jem and Scout slowly approached the tree. Jem reached in the knot hole and pulled out a tiny package. When they arrived home they opened it to find two polished pennies. Jem suddenly stopped to think for a minute. Maybe Boo was leaving these items for them in the tree as presents. He then disbelieved the thought and told Scout that the knot hole was just probably a hiding place for kid's stuff. Towards the end of the summer Dill made a new plan for him and Jem to do. Jem was to go up to a window and look inside to see if he could see Boo. Scout, Dill, and Jem slowly snuck up to the house and stopped at the bottom of the porch.
