Book Review - The Conviction to Lead

The point of this book was not to give mere ideas of what leadership is, but to redefine the way individuals view leadership and their approach to it. In the beginning pages of this book, Mohler surveys the vast leadership industry and points out that although there many books have been written, very few address the core beliefs that direct a leader. This book is mainly aimed towards an audience who values Christian morals, who has faith in God, and belief in the Bible. This book also shows the best ways to lead and manage within any organization, Christian or not. This book takes the reader down a path of defining what conviction is to leaving a legacy in one's leadership; a legacy that lives on even in death. He claims that most leadership books are missing something, and this something is what he tries to rediscover. .
In twenty-five short chapters, Al Mohler describes what it is to be a leader who leans on the truth, who maintains credibility, who develops intellect, who inspires others, who serves, and who leads in such a way that it impacts those around them for the better. Leaders are those, according to Mohler, that pull people into the story, and who inspire the people that are being led. He states, "Leadership that matters grows out of the leader's own belief that the story is true, that it matters, and that it must both expand and continue" (Mohler, 2012, p. 39).
Leaders are those that tell a story by their actions, those that bring their followers into the story, and vie for the best story possible. This book gives the reader an idea of how to address the changing world, how to use technology to share their convictions, and how to always be prepared to defend the choices that are made. The author gives many examples of his own experiences. He was thrust into a president position and had to change the face of an organization, and yet he believed in what he preached, so he inspired those under him to believe as well.
