There is a new controversy going around the United States after the death of a SeaWorld trainer in 2010. A new movie called Blackfish has been made to portray SeaWorld as a bad place. Many oceans themed amusement parks have lived animal shows that feature animals such as whales, dolphins, and sea lions. They perform stunts in large salt water pools in front of thousands of people. But lately, the killer whales in these shows have been attacking their trainers and a handful of them have died because of these accidents. To this date, there has been three reported deaths of trainers because of killer whales that live in captivity. Some people say that these killer whales should not be kept in captivity but there is also an other side of people that say the killer whales are not dangerous and should be kept in captivity. Swimming with killer whales is not too dangerous because SeaWorld cares for their animals extremely well, SeaWorld promises to make the killer whale areas bigger, and Blackfish the movie is made to trick the people. .
Supporters of blackfish may say that SeaWorld disrespects their animals and does not treat them humanely. This is completely false though. The killer whale life spans in these habitats is recently close to those of that live in the wild. In SeaWorld there is multiple killer whales that are over the age of 30 and there is one that is close to 50. Also at SeaWorld the whales receive 24 hour care and surveillance. A SeaWorld article, Killer Whale Health and Daily Care quotes that " We apply a broad range of best practices in behavioral training, environmental enrichment, preventive health, veterinary medicine and facilities design and management." What they are explaining is that when SeaWorld receives these killer whales, they get nothing but the best veterinary care and the best way of life. .
Another reason that killer whales are not too dangerous is because SeaWorld promises to redo all killer whale habitats.
