Red Dress - 1946 by Alice Munro

This was shown in the following quote: .
"When I was asked a question in class, any simple little question at all, my voice was apt to come out squeaky, or else hoarse and trembling." (Munro 3) Through this quote, it is shown that the narrator was uncomfortable throughout her day in high school. Her voice would 'come out squeaky' or would be 'trembling.' This implied that she was lacking self confidence and was insecure of herself. .
It was clear that since the narrator was not very comfortable with people of her own sex, she would not at all be comfortable or unable to be at ease with the opposite sex. Such is the case with a popular boy in her high school, Manson Williams. During a dance in the narrator's high school, Manson Williams approaches her and attempts to dance with her. With Manson suddenly approaching her, she started 'trembling' and could not speak to him, nor make eye contact. She started feeling ashamed as Manson, who was a popular boy was dancing with a 'nonentity' like herself. The quote to support this is "To have to dance with a nonentity like me was as offensive to him He steered me, stumbling, to the edge of the floor. He took his hand from my waist and dropped my arm." (Munro 7) From the quote above, it was said that while Manson and the narrator were dancing, Manson 'stumbled' at the edge of the floor. He then 'took his hands off her [my] waist and dropped her [my] arm.' He then left saying 'see you soon.' This implied that the narrator could not sustain .
Analysis of Quote: Since the girl is unable to be at ease around others, especially those of opposite sex, her discomfort eventually makes people around her feel apprehensive. The quote stated above is the scene where the girl finds herself dancing with Manson Williams, a popular student in school. However, due to her nervousness and lack of confidence, she stumbles all over the dance floor, prompting Manson to leave her on the edge of the floor alone.
