Emily Murphy along with her friends Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Mir Edwards, and Irene Parlby are down in history. If it wasn't for those six women then today would be a very different place then it is right now. If you were a woman back at the turn of the century you wouldn't have the right to vote or do near as many things as you could do today. As you probably know woman used to classify as not being real people. When Emily Murphy fought to get a woman appointed to the Senate, The Constitutional act said something different then what they were trying to go. In 1867 (BNA act), affirmed that "the Governor General shall summon qualified persons to the Senate." Their opponents argued that within the statute of British common law, woman were not "persons" and therefore could not hold public office.
That all changed when these six incredible woman took action. They started a petition to the supreme court of Canada. Trying to achieve woman being called "persons" the law stated that woman were not qualified as real people. These actions lead them too eventually conquering there goal, woman around Canada soon became eligible to vote and slowly other things started to become better for woman. It was in 1929 that the Privy Council overturned the ruling of Canada's Supreme Court. It ruled that woman were indeed persons and deserved every right that men had.
If it was not for these woman schools would most likely still be segregated and woman wouldn't be able to have high end jobs. The only jobs that would be available for woman would be something like a housewives or maids. No woman would ever have the chance to be above men or remotely successful. So in conclusion I think these women deserve a lot of credit for standing up for what they believe in.
