The Death of Edward I was the main reason for Scottish Indep

The death of Edward I in 1307 was the main reason for Scottish independence. Edward I was a strong king and it was extremely difficult for the Scottish to win their independence while he was reigning. When he died, the Scottish were determined to fight for their independence. Edward I left as his successor, his son Edward II who wasn't a strong king and had no interest in wars with Scotland so the Scottish found this as their chance to succeed.
Edward I was a very powerful king with complete dominance of England. He had conquered Wales with his almost unbeatable army and had successfully invaded Scotland in 1296 but found it difficult to keep. Edward's ambition was to own Scottish lands and rule over Scotland as he did England.
Edward's power and army were a great threat to Scotland and this made fighting for their independence almost impossible.
Edward I was very good at manipulating the Scots by giving them English lands and possessions. This became a very successful way of getting the Scots to play right into Edwards" hands.
He was so compelling that he managed to manipulate the Scottish king at the time into supplying Scottish men, money and arms to England for its upcoming war with France. When the Scots refused to do so, Edward I decided to use his forces to take Scotland and attacked Berwick; a small town to the north of Scotland, killing Scottish women, children and some of the Scottish army, leaving Scotland a devastated mess. This left Scotland almost no chance to even consider fighting Edwards" army to finally win their independence because they would be easily conquered.
In the reign of Edward I, a commoner named William Wallace was starting to oppose the English rule by attacking small English garrisons. The word soon spread out over Scotland and in a short time William had enough followers to defend Scotland. William had so many followers because he had faith in the entire army.
