Citizen Kane - Picnic

This scene is an important and complex one, which begins in a car traveling toward a picnic which Kane has organised. The lavish lifestyle of Kane is prominent, and is shown in all aspects of this scene. Consisting of 23 shots and lasting for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, this scene directly shows the end of the relationship between Susan and Kane. .
             .
In the prior scene, Susan is seen beside the enormous Xanadu fireplace piecing together huge jigsaw puzzles depicting various outdoor scenes. However, the couple is refused the ability to have a spontaneous and relaxed outdoors when Kane organises a picnic. The sequence begins with a shot from the inside of the Dusenberg, of Susan and Kane. Susan is obviously joyless as she mutters the line "you never give me anything I really care about", to which Kane shows no interest. Kane wears a pair of tinted sunglasses and a straw hat, which represents the day about to be had. This can also be seen in the rear window to the right of the vehicle behind. The blues-style music begins during the fade from Xanadu to the next shot and is a dark music style involving muted trumpets playing in a looming manner. I feel this music represents the relationship between Susan and Kane nicely, and the distance between them is felt. As Susan continues the argument in the car, she only receives a sideway glance from Kane, which as well as showing his authoritarianism also shows his weariness of bickering with Susan. The trumpets are joined with the trombones after the line "you never give me anything I really care about" and this, along with the monotone voice Susan uses shows Kane's dominance and the uselessness of Susan's efforts. The sympathy felt in this scene, I felt, was for neither character, but more for the relationship they had to endure together.
A dissolve follows the scene leading into the procession of the cars along the beach. The bright midday sun, casts long black shadows under the cars, and this along with a different style of muted trumpets makes the procession look almost like a funeral.
