Question: Which community is responsible for the ultimate demise of the wretch/monster in Frankenstein? Use three pieces of evidence to explain how and why.
Have you ever been rejected from a group or a community because you had been different? This has been the case in the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. There had been a monster or wretch created by a scientist named Victor Frankenstein who had not been accepted and hurt by societies of people who thought of him as hideous and harmful. Mainly, the community responsible for the ultimate demise of the wretch or monster are the people who rejected him for being different, and amongst the people, Victor Frankenstein was in that community.
Society has set an unbreakable code every individual must follow to be accepted within it. Those who don't follow the "standard" are hated by the crowds and are banned for the reason of being different. This is the case of the wretch; he first broke the "standard" when he entered that town. In chapter 11 the wretch states, .
"One of the best of these I entered, but I had hardly placed my foot within the door before the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted. The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me, until, grievously bruised by stones and many other kinds of missile weapons, I escaped to the open country and fearfully took refuge in a low hovel, quite bare, and making a wretched appearance after the palaces I had beheld in the village." (91).
Reading this quote, it was seen that the luck of the wretch was horrible from the start. He was fled from and seen as an evil thing by societies.
It is one thing not to be accepted by society for the wretch, but it is another and far more worse to not be accepted by the figure that created of him. Victor Frankenstein was one of the individuals of that community that saw him as an abhorred and evil. In chapter 10 Victor says to the wretch, .
