Lowering the Legal Drinking Age

Lowering the Legal Drinking Age to Eighteen.
Lowering the legal drinking age to eighteen would be very beneficial to our ever growing nation. At age eighteen, young people are formally categorized as adults. There are many reasons why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen. Less criminal activity, age of initiation, and better production plus creation of more money sources are three of the more important reasons for lowering the legal drinking age. Many political figures have argued over this policy for numerous years. It wasn't until July 1, 1998 that all fifty states agreed to make twenty one the legal age to drink. This was only done because the government said they would withhold federal highway funds from the states that didn't rise the drinking age. This is a type of blackmail used by our government to get what they want. If America is a democracy for the people, why can't the people vote to have the age limit lowered? .
Lowering the legal drinking age to eighteen would lead to less criminal activity nationwide. Many young adults don't follow the law that says one cannot drink until age twenty one. Two thirds of American college students said they drink alcohol and fifty four percent of teenagers nationwide said they have no problem getting alcohol (Jacinto). All people can get alcohol if they want it bad enough. One of the main reasons young adults drink is because their older peers encourage them to drink. Teens see those peers drink and think that alcohol is the key to popularity. Once they start drinking, it is their peers over twenty one who buy the alcohol. If the drinking age was lowered cops would almost eliminate the charges teens and the suppliers of teens get. For example, many teens get caught with alcohol all the time and get minor in possession convictions. If a teen has a good police record, this charge is usually dropped basically making it useless to even give the conviction.
