Timothy also had his cat with him named Stew Cat, who Phillip later on eventually got used to. .
As soon as Timothy and Phillip reached the nearest island, Phillip knew he had to be dependent the extraordinary West Indian no matter what he looked like. He knew they had to stick together in order to survive with the little fresh water and food supply that they already had. Timothy had to teach Phillip to do a lot of things; he taught Phillip how to fish, hoe to build a hut, and how to start fires. Timothy would always warn Phillip about not looking directly up at the sun, considering he was from the Caribbean, but his warning didn't sink in because one day Phillip couldn't see anything but darkness, explaining that Phillip had defied Timothy's warning and became blind. Now Philllip genuinely had to be dependent on Timothy. .
Every day was a struggle to survive. They had to hunt and eat raw fish, search for dried palm fonds to make a hut, and search for burning wood and trees for fires. For Phillip, the first few days on the island were terrible. It was ofcourse, being unable to see that made everything for Phillip frightening. While being on the island for several days with Timothy, he soon became attached to him. And sooner he became inseparable with him. Timothy and Stew Cat was all Phillip had left; that and his faith that he will get out of the island and back with his parents again. .
One very hot morning in July, Timothy had informed Phillip that a very bad storm was coming there way, which could wipe away everything they owned on the land. First, Timothy lashed their water keg high on a palm truck. Next, he took the remaining rope that they had and tied it securely around a tree so when the storm comes, Phillip could loch his arms over the rope and hang on. Timothy spent a lot of time down at the raft also, stripping off everything usable and carrying it back up the hill.
