He is demonstrating that he appears to be insane but in reality he is plotting to get out of the war. This tactic goes over quite well until he discovers Catch-22. Yossarian is not the only person to ever of used this, Russian leader Jozef Stalin also used this type of action to control his people and for his own gain.
Stalin, the leader of Communist Russia, was very keen on keeping absolute power of his people. One of his methods for gaining control was through military superiority. He appeared to be concerned for the working class Russian but in reality his goal was to be all-powerful. Stalin was quoted as saying, "Death solves all problems - no man, no problem." This quotes proves his contempt for the lives of the people of his nation. He did not care about the lives of men. Yossarian proved to others that he was insane, Stalin proved to others that he cared for the people. Yossarian tried to gain freedom from his mask while Stalin's only goal was to gain power through the exploit of the citizens hopes for a better future. Stalin and Yossarian are comparable in their deceptions.
Furthermore, Stalin was known for his fiery speeches; this was one of his methods for gaining public support. Stalin was also infamous for not caring about the lives of his people. During a rallying speech during World War 2 he was quoted as saying, "Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas." This quote demonstrates his want for combat. He does not want his enemies to have ideas and the only way to destroy a persons ideas is through the killing of those people. His deception continues, by promising his people victory, which will benefit his stature, but at the sacrifice of many of his men. Yossarian is trying to get out of the war in order to save himself, Stalin wants war so he can prosper. .
Yossarian carries a mask throughout the novel. His mask every now and then does seem to break and his true personality is revealed.
