Saving Private Ryan vs. Braveheart

The German who killed Mellish just walks past him. This is a very powerful extract from the powerful and moving plot. Who exactly the good guys are differs from film to film, but in Hollywood films they usually are patriotic and rather conservative Americans, whereas the bad guys are usually either criminals or agents of foreign powers. Braveheart does indeed create this effect of tragedy, but it gets confusing and hard to absorb. Confusion sets in over the relation between the dead wife, Wallace and the princess. The movie tries to portray that the whole fight is just for the dead wife. It tries to convince how much Mel Gibson loves his wife. Spielberg spares the viewer nothing of the horrors of battle, using every tactic at his disposal to convey the chaos and senseless waste that lies at the core of any engagement.
