He then began to tell me that he left his small town of Mexicali. Mexicali is a small city in Mexico that borders the United States. This is where most the refugees come from. When he left Mexicali, he hide in a trains box car along with a few other men. He went from train to train. After a few days he described himself, along with the other men as savage dogs. They would get off the train when it would stop and look through trash bins for food. This shocked me and then for some reason I began to grow sad and then began to hold back the tears. Days passed, and they still were set on getting some where. When I asked him were he was headed he said anywhere. It did not matter because he knew once he got there he would find a job and have all the things he did not have at home.
A week went by and the train had stopped once again. He had reached his destination. Madera, California is were he felt he would make some money. The night he arrived he found shelter with other immigrants in a two bedroom home with nearly fifteen men. After settling down that night he decided to go to a bar and have a drink. There he saw a Mexican man who looked like he had money. My father then asked him for a job and the man told him he would start tomorrow. The next morning a van picked him up and took them to a field their he would begin his life as a laborer picking peaches. .
Now that the story of my father has been shortly and brokenly told it is now my mothers turn. My mother was born into a larger family. She was the last one born to Jesus and Juanita Garcia. My mother, Juana Ramos, was born on August 15, 1953. She was lucky number thirteen. My mothers story is a bit different. In 1967 my mothers" older sister Reyna along with her other sister Haidee decided to come to the United States as well. They too were in search of a life different from where they lived. They were born and raised in a city in Mexico by the name of San Fernando.
