Antonio Gaudi

It was very apparent that he dedicated himself only to the subjects that interested him. "His academic record reveals a decided character who devoted himself to what attracted him, nonchalantly ignoring anything that, for one reason or another, failed to arouse his interest,"" (Lyons 11). .
In 1973 Gaudi left his home and traveled to Barcelona where he enrolled in the Provincial School of Architecture. It was well known that Gaudi was not attached to the school or the teachers considered being the most influential. He .
was not a student that was happy with discipline and order. He believed "that one should at all times favor direct .
experience, personal work and fidelity to one's own impulses above all the conventions of the scholars,"" (Lyons 12). Very few of his designs as a student are well known. His most interesting designs are a covered central courtyard for a building intended for the Provincial Council, an entrance gateway to a cemetery, and an assemble hall for a university. The design for the assembly hall was a work presented for his final examination. It was a really complex design with references to classic architecture along with colorful and exotic details (Lyons 12). .
Gaudi's interests in school took a backseat to his many experiences throughout his student years as an assistant in different architectural practices in Barcelona. Since Gaudi did not come from wealth, in his later years of school it became necessary to work. He worked for a number of different architects, in buildings by which it is sometimes possible to detect traces of his early style. This provided him with experience and development of a taste for practical problems that has not been evident throughout his professional career (Lyons 12). .
             .
Over the course of Gaudi's career, he developed a sensuous, curving, almost surreal design style which established him as the innovative leader of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement.
