Christian Ethics: Steroids

2.
The sports that tend have the highest number of steroid users are weight-lifting and body-building. Up to ninety percent of men in these sports have reported using the drugs at some point. Football players and field athletes such as shot-putters and javelin and discuss throwers show only a slightly lower percentage. If these athletes wish to succeed, they are required to have superior strength, which shows why steroid use is quite tempting for them. 1 .
While athletes are the majority among steroid users, there is still a large market for those who are not in competitive sport. People in occupations that can require high amounts of strength (bouncers, law enforcement officers, and military personnel, to name a few) can also be tempted to test out the drug. There also tends to be a number of users in the populations of male models and homosexuals. The main uses for anabolic steroids, then, are for physical strength and improved appearance. 3.
Why the rave? Most will claim that steroid use comes from the desire to gain that elusive competitive edge. Our athletes want to be better than their peers so that they may reap the benefits of being the best. Other users are competing in a contest of physical appearance. They have desire to demand more attention and more attraction from their peers and they intend to do so on the basis of looks. .
This desire is as old as the idea of sport itself. Greek wrestlers would consume huge amounts of meat in an effort to build muscle and Norse barbarians reportedly ate mushrooms of a hallucinogenic nature in order to prepare for battle.4 Athletes of the fourth and fifth centuries are said to have eaten lion hearts and deer livers on the belief that they could obtain the animal traits of speed, bravery and strength. 5 .
Our own efforts are based on a similar idea, only with quite a bit more science behind them. Study after study has shown that steroids used with a heavy work-out regiment do indeed rapidly increase muscle mass and strength, much more so than the same work-out without the substance.
