Personal Perspectives on Nursing

The meaning of value in its" most general sense is "the worth, importance or usefulness of something to somebody" (Encarta encyclopedia, 2004). Just as every individual is one of a kind, values that one holds are unique and derived from life experience and what we perceive to be important in our own right. The way we as nurses perceive our personal and professional values becomes an important part of our lifestyle as we will inevitably reflect on them throughout our practice. There are many values that are important to me and throughout this paper I will examine them and reflect on some reasons why I chose to enter nursing. I understand that everyone has different views on the nursing profession and that we will all continue to gain more values as our experiences endure. I will also integrate in to this paper how I was influenced in the development of my values as well as the relationship between my personal values and my views of a current nursing issue. .
I believe that nursing is a profession which entails acts of patience and respect and as nurses we must take full responsibility in the care of our patients. This being said, I believe that the way in which we treat our patients must coincide with the way we ourselves would like to be treated should we be in the same situation. As we have learned throughout the years of studying, we must learn to put ourselves in shoes of the patient and integrate into our care plan what we think is best for them but respect the wishes and rights of each individual when doing so ( Lynn Judd lecture notes, 2003). We must put aside our biases and stereotypes in order to give the best quality care and actively involve our patients by giving them choices as well as autonomy to aid in their well being. In the same sense, we must not make assumptions as to what a patient is feeling such as pain or comfort as we must communicate with the patient and always take the objective view.
