It thrives on breaking the potential spirit that everyone has and making them into a factory produced mass. A significant example is McMurphy from the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." McMurphy is hardly comparable to a regular man who does not let himself waver to the day by day routine of cubicle slavery and the stimulating everyday highlight of walking the dog. McMurphy lets himself follow his guttural, primal instincts and is true to himself and really, in the end, that is all that really matters. Being a strong person despite the overwhelming pressure not to be, and living on your own terms. This did not really work out to McMurpy's benefit in the end, as his end came as a product of it. McMurphy is an extreme case of society breaking a person down into their elements again. By lobotomizing him, they broke one of the only things that could change this world: divergence among the people. Among the other men in the psych ward, McMurphy was the only man out of 18 who had true spirit and didn't just conform to the standard that was expected of them. It proved to be infectious among the men, as once they saw that you could get away with not following every trivial rule you could lead a better, more enlivening existence.
What a boring world we would live in if every single person didn't even vary from the norm. Nothing would get done in the way of progression, and mankind would really not advance. If there was not originality, we would not be in the technologically developed state that we are a part of now. People opposed change from the horse and buggy to the automobile, and if Henry Ford had taken this as a point to follow the desires of a rigid society, he would not have created a dynamic industry that entirely revolutionized the efficiency of people. How else do you reach a point where people are ready for a change? By allowing them options that are unique and out of the ordinary, and those which will take a lead in steering people in a new direction.
